Hospital Fresh 48 vs. Newborn Session: What’s the Difference?
If you're expecting a baby, you've probably heard the terms Fresh 48 and newborn photography — but what exactly is the difference?
While both sessions document those first days with your baby, they are completely different experiences. A Fresh 48 session takes place in the hospital during those first 48 hours, while a newborn session is designed to capture your family once you're home and a little more settled.
And honestly? There is something incredibly special about having both.
What Is a Hospital Fresh 48 Session?
A Fresh 48 photography session is a lifestyle photography session that takes place in the hospital within the first couple of days after your baby is born.
These sessions are all about documenting the beginning of your baby's story exactly as it happened.
There is no need to wait for the perfect hair, a perfectly clean hospital room, or for everyone to feel completely put together. Your baby has just arrived, you're becoming parents for the first time or all over again, and your family is adjusting to having this new little person in your arms.
I document those genuine moments — holding your baby for the first time, tiny fingers and toes, hospital details, siblings meeting the newest addition, feeding, cuddling, and all of the little moments that are easy to forget once you're home and life starts moving quickly.
For families who already have children, Fresh 48 sessions can be especially meaningful. Watching an older sibling meet their new baby brother or sister for the first time is something you'll want to remember long after those hospital days are over.
What Is a Newborn Photography Session?
A newborn photography session takes place after you've left the hospital and had a little time to settle in as a family.
Unlike a Fresh 48 session, a newborn session is more intentional and carefully planned. Depending on the type of session you choose, we can photograph your family in the studio or in your home.
This is where we slow things down.
We capture your baby's tiny details, your connection as parents, siblings loving on their new baby, and the people who make up your family right now.
Newborn sessions also give us the opportunity to create beautiful portraits that work together as artwork throughout your home — images you'll be able to look back on years from now and remember exactly how small your baby once was.
Fresh 48 vs. Newborn Session: What's the Difference?
The easiest way to think about it is this:
Fresh 48 = the beginning of your baby's story.
Newborn session = your family settling into your new normal.
A Fresh 48 session is documentary and focused on those first hours in the hospital. The details are real and unscripted — hospital bracelets, tiny hats, blankets, visitors, siblings meeting the baby, and all those little details that belong specifically to those first days. I love to think of these sessions are more documentary style.
A newborn session gives us more time and flexibility. We can focus on beautiful portraits of your baby and your family in a relaxed environment, whether that's in the studio or at home.
Neither replaces the other because they document two completely different parts of the newborn experience.
Do You Need Both?
If you're wondering whether you should book both, my answer is simple: they tell two different stories.
Your Fresh 48 session preserves the story of your baby's arrival.
Your newborn session preserves the story of your family after you bring your baby home.
The difference between seeing your baby in the hospital and then seeing those same tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and newborn features during their newborn session is incredible.
And babies change so quickly.
Those first few days can feel like a blur of hospital stays, visitors, feedings, and very little sleep. Having photographs of those moments means you don't have to rely on your memory alone. I will always recommend both sessions just to help you capture the blur of these early days. I also offer bundle packages to offer a slight discount when booking both sessions together.
Why I Love Offering Both
As a newborn and family photographer serving Columbus, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, and the Atlanta area, I love being able to document more than just a baby's portrait.
I want to document your family.
That means photographing the excitement of meeting your baby in the hospital, the connection between siblings, the way you hold your newborn, and the quiet moments that happen once you are home.
My goal isn't to create photographs that simply show what your baby looked like.
It's to create photographs that bring you back to what this season felt like.
Because someday those hospital bracelets will be tucked away, your baby's newborn clothes won't fit anymore, and you may have a hard time remembering just how tiny they were.
The photographs will bring you back.
Planning Your Fresh 48 or Newborn Session
If you're expecting, it's never too early to start planning your photography experience.
Fresh 48 sessions are scheduled around your birth and take place in the hospital shortly after your baby arrives. Newborn sessions are typically planned ahead of time so we have everything ready when your little one makes their appearance. Newborn sessions are typically done around 14 days old.
And if you're considering both, we can plan the experience together so your photographs tell the complete story — from those first hours in the hospital to your baby's first days at home.
If you're looking for a Fresh 48 photographer or newborn photographer in Columbus, GA, Auburn, AL, or Atlanta, I'd love to help you document this season in a way that feels natural, beautiful, and true to your family.
Your baby's first days only happen once. Let's make sure you have photographs that allow you to remember them.
